Types Of Wood Railings

Pressure treated Pine wood is the most common form of a wood railing, though other wood materials can be used to offer natural moisture resistance as well as different appearances and colours. These are 5 types of wood used in exterior railings:

  • Pine – Pine can be the most cost-effective wood options for deck railings.
  • Cypress – Cypress is a darker wood tone that displays beautiful and warm shades of red.
  • Cedar – This rich golden and brown wood creates an upscale and inviting deck space.
  • Redwood – Redwood is a very high-end material that showcases deep red and burgundy tones.
  • Tropical – These woods are tan and smooth and can last upwards of 40 years when properly treated and stained.

How To Finish Wood Railings

The finish on a wood railing plays a major role in the railing’s final appearance and resistance to rot or insect infestations. These are 5 steps that outline how to professionally finish a wood railing.

  • Step 1 – The deck is prepared for painting and finishing. Run a heavy string or tape across the perimeter of the deck and create some signs mentioning wet paint. This helps ensure no one uses the railing while it is being finished.
  • Step 2 – Any existing paint or rough patches are removed from your railing system with 80-grit sandpaper and or a sanding block.
  • Step 3 – With much lower grit sandpaper, the surface is smoothed. After sanding is completed a slightly damp cloth is used to remove all dust created during the sanding process.
  • Step 4 – After the railing has dried a paint primer can be applied to the surface. Quality is key to create a fully primed finish and to avoid paintbrush fibres from falling onto your railing.
  • Step 5  – Paint can now be applied using a new and or well-cleaned brush. Several coats can be applied. When the paint is dry, drop cloths can be removed and the railing is ready for use.

Wood railings are natural, elegant, cost-effective and highly customizable. Wood railings can also last for decades when properly installed and maintained. These are 3 great benefits of wood railings on your decking systems.
